If you have a product that comes in different colors, sizes, or has some other variable attribute, you’ll want to add it as a variable product as opposed to a simple product.
From the dashboard, mouse over Products and click Add New. In the dropdown menu at the top of the page, select Variable Product.
Now you can add the Product Title and Short Description. Then click the large image icon at the top right corner of the page to add the default image for the product. Note: you can add separate images for each color option later in the process. The default image is the one that will be shown by default. Next, select the product category that best suits your product. You can choose more than one category. Click the arrow next to a category to unfold the list of subcategories below.
Now scroll to the bottom of the page and click Attributes. Next to Add Attribute, click Add. Now you’ll need to choose a Name i.e. “Color” or “Size.” In the Values field, you’ll put the options separated by the “|” symbol. These might be color options like “Blue|Green|Pink|Red” or size options like “XS|S|M|L|XL.” You can add more than one attribute, for example, you can create a color AND a size attribute. Check the boxes next to Visible on the product page and Use as Variation.
Now click Variations on the left side of the page. If the product image will be the same for all variations, you can leave Any [attribute] selected in the dropdown and simply input the product price and you’re done! You can hit Submit and the product will go live. If you want a different image for each variation, i.e. you want a picture of a green cat sweater to be shown when the customer selects green in the dropdown, then continue reading.
To set a different product image for each variation, select the variation in the dropdown. Click the image icon and add the corresponding product image for that variation. Be sure to set the price in the Regular Price($) field. You must set a price for each variation in order for it to be shown on the product page. Now click on the plus (+) sign at the right bottom side of that field in order to move on to the next variation. Repeat the process for each variation, making sure to set the price for each one. Now you’re done! Hit Submit to publish the product.
